6 SAVVY GUIDELINES

TO

GIFT ART

Posted on November 16, 2018

With a little bit of research and some careful consideration, an artwork makes a beautiful gift. Viewing a piece of art is an ongoing, evolving experience. It brings joy and enhances the environment.
Don’t fall into the unavoidable traps of the cliché or the boring gifts -  Be a Rockstar Gifter. And make your recipient feel like a Rockstar.
But hold on. Before becoming a rock star, here are some guidelines to consider.

1. KNOW THE PERSONALITY OF THE RECIPIENT

No matter what the occasion is, the first step before gifting art is to know your recipients, whether it’s family, friends or business relationships.
You need to understand the recipients' personality and their attitude toward receiving a gift of art. They may not care what they hang on their walls or appreciate art. The following tips will help you determine if they’re open to collecting art. A general rule for gifting is you are buying it for them, not for yourself so choose what they would like.
-Have a conversation and observe, evaluate verbal response, facial look, and body language. Learn to collect invaluable information on their art-related likes and dislikes.
- Men and women judge art differently.
- If you have been to their house, then pay attention to what style of decor do they have – traditional, contemporary, transitional, eclectic.

 2. MAKE IT UNIQUE
We see the same prints of classic artwork all the time. Ask yourself a question – would you like to own commercial mass-produced art reproductions, or would you like to be a proud owner of one-of-a-kind piece of art. The same applies when it comes to a gift that would set you apart from others by the way. So, instead of going to a retail store why not buy an original work of art from an artist directly? This experience will also help you gain connections and insight into the piece. You would be amazed to support an artist and buy a one of a kind gift.

3. MAKE IT MEANINGFUL & THOUGHTFUL

Art evokes emotions and can reveal someone’s taste and personality. If you know the personality and taste of the recipient, gifting a compelling artwork that resonates with them will bring tears of joy in their eyes.
To put the cherry on the top, include a note that lets them know what prompted you to buy a specific piece of art for them. Art is always better when you know the story behind it.

4. ECONOMICAL OPTIONS

If you have a small budget, consider getting a smaller work, because original works come in all sizes and there is always a space for a small work at home, whether it’s hung, or sits on a mantel piece, shelf, cabinet or a bedside table.
Or, get a fine art print. It will still make it a one of a kind gift. And if your budget allows, get it framed. This will give them an instant gratification when they can put up an artwork immediately. Find coupons of your local art stores for frames.

5. GIFTING ART TO BUSINESS ASSOCIATES

The gift of art for a business relationship can be a challenge e.g., colleague, boss, or a client.
Select a work-space appropriate piece. Even if you have been to and viewed art in the recipient’s home, choose a piece that is suitable for their workspace. Look for the styles, colors, and themes of objects in their space.
Use common sense and prudent etiquette. No matter what the recipient’s taste in art is, it’s best to choose a conservative yet creative work that everyone in the office can enjoy and appreciate.

6. GIFT CARD/CERTIFICATE

A gift certificate is always a perfect backup plan to offer your recipient the pleasure to browse, discover and invest in an artwork they really love. It also takes the pressure off you to keep it a personal and thoughtful gift.
